18% more exhibitors and 10% more visitors on the world’s largest exhibition for optoelectronics in China

Nov 29, 2007

From September 6 – 9, 2007, the 9th CIOE (China International Optoelectronic Exposition) was held at the Shenzhen Exhibition Center. The CIOE has meanwhile become the world’s largest exhibition for optoelectronics, breaking records in every respect.

The optoelectronics trade fair was organised by BMC Herong, a subsidiary of Business Media China AG. Compared to last year, the exhibition area increased by almost 20% and thus covered 55,000 sqm or, respectively, 5 exhibition halls at the Shenzhen Exhibition Center. 1,902 exhibitors presented their products on the exhibition, which means an increase of 18%. More than half of the exhibitors represented international companies and brands such as Sony, Olympus, Leica, Yokogawa, Schott, Coherent, and other market leaders. During the four days, 77,000 visitors (i.e. 10% more than in the preceding year) surged into the exhibition halls. The fact that 25% of them were international visitors underlines the international significance of the CIOE.

The trade fair presented the latest innovations in the fields of laser and infrared applications, optical data transfer, optics and optoelectronic displays, and semiconductor technology. In addition to the exhibition, the CIOE offered a three-day conference for China’s optoelectronics industry that dealt with both scientific and practical issues. The exhibition and the conference programme were supported by all important Chinese universities as well as by optoelectronics-related state institutions: the China Association for Science and Technology, the Academy of Opto-Electronics, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Chinese Optical Society, the China Electronic Chamber of Commerce, the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the Ministry of the Information Industry.

The trade visitors, 70% of which belong to the top management of their respective companies, were extremely satisfied with the quality of the exhibition: “The CIOE is a high-level event with a perfect organisation. Here, we are given the opportunity to gain insight into the latest developments and trends of the global optoelectronics industry,” said Kun Xu, representative of the renowned Chinese telecommunication supplier Huawei.

With more than 30%, the percentage of international exhibitors at the CIOE is above average, which further ensures the high quality of the event. Among them is Germany’s industry leader Schott AG; the company has been continuously participating in the exhibition since 2002: “The results of this year showed us once more that the CIOE is by far the most important event for us in China. It provides us with the best access to the Chinese market and will, in the long run, be a central element of our exhibition strategy in East Asia,” said Jürgen Böhlke, Head of the Trade Fairs & Exhibitions Department of Schott Electronic Packaging GmbH.

The organisers of the country participations from France and Canada – UBIFRANCE and the Canadian Advanced Technology Association (CATA) – have realised the event’s importance as well. Both countries were once again represented at the exhibition and have already made the CIOE a part of their 2008 schedule.

When looking at the market data, it becomes evident that Shenzhen is the ideal location for the CIOE and that it offers the best access to the Chinese market for international companies: In 2006, more than 1,000 companies produced optoelectronic devices and accessories worth USD 6 billion in the Shenzhen region. With regard to the total output of the Chinese optoelectronics industry, this means a market share of almost 50%.

Aat van Eeden, Member of the Board and Head of the Exhibitions, Conferences & Publishing Department of Business Media China AG, also expressed his satisfaction with the exhibition’s results: “This year’s growth enabled us to strengthen our position as the leading optoelectronics exhibition in China and throughout the world. We expect solid growth for the next year as well. Moreover, we will further develop the event’s international character.”
